History of OMS:
We started out with a five member team that performed the key manufacturing steps of Ophthalmic knives for a US based company. This gave us direct access to the new developments taking place the ophthalmic industry and in the surgical techniques. Back in those days the western world was the hub for design and development of new ophthalmic surgical knives. Not having the quick communication channels of today meant a massive delay in India getting access to latest ophthalmic surgical knives and surgery techniques. There were no indigenous manufacturers of Ophthalmic knives in India at that time.
Our founding fathers late Mr. L. N. Lalwani and the present chairman Mr. G. H. Patel took it upon themselves to bridge this gap. We (Nightingale Healthcare Products Pvt. Ltd.) became the first manufacturer of Ophthalmic microsurgical knives in India in 1988. Early 1990s saw major new developments in the cataract surgery techniques. This inspired our founding fathers and gave them the vision to manufacture ophthalmic microsurgical knives in a more organized way and on a larger scale. A separate partnership Sharpedge Industries was formed to cater exclusively for the Indian market.
Having the direct access to the ophthalmic knife designs being used in the western countries, we started manufacturing our range of specialized Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) knives in the early 1990s. It was only in the late 1990s that the MSICS started gaining popularity in India. This meant we were ready with the knives for MSICS surgery well before the technique first came to India. We feel proud to have done our little bit in promoting the uptake of the MSICS technique in India. This helped us in establishing and popularizing our Sharpedge brand.
Our vision was very clear, manufacture the latest high quality ophthalmic knives for ophthalmologists in India at value for money price. Our aim was not to cream the market but to make the products available to the masses. In keeping with our aim we chose not to exploit our monopolistic position. Till this day, our highly sought after Sharpedge knives are considered one of the best value for money knives in the market. Our close interactions with the ophthalmologists and the continuous development of new knives have resulted in us possessing the largest range of Ophthalmic knives in the world.
In the early 2000s, we broadened our long term vision to cater to all the needs of cataract surgeons. We formed a new company with the name of Ophthalmic Marketing and Services (OMS). OMS started off by becoming the sole distributor of Sharpedge knives in India. Keeping the convenience of our customers in mind and the soon to be extended product range, Sharpedge was amalgamated in to OMS. Over the years we have progressively added accessories , cannulas, instruments , drapes and IOLs to our product range. The latest addition to our product range our IOLs, are produced in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Since the launch in 2014 our IOLs have been very well accepted and they have been implanted in lakhs of patients and continue to perform exceedingly well for them.
